The Ventilation Light - Reports

Partial Report 1 - Fundamentals of the options and challenges of the application of Ventilation Light

Introduction
The current report is a part of the results of the research and development project monitoring and testing the performance of a Ventilation Light in housing and schools. The Ventilation Light is a device, which provides information about the state and quality of the indoor air and the necessity to ventilate.

A key part of the Ventilation Spotlight is an air quality sensor developed within the "Luqas 1" research project of the Federal Ministry of Economy. Further elements include an air humidity sensor, a temperature sensor, an electricity supply as well as various computation modules and a display unit.

This partial report is based on a literature review, providing an overview of the topic “Ventilation and air pollutants” in housing and schools. The development and commercialization of the Ventilation Light require, on the one hand, exploring the reasonable application options, and on the other, consideration of the challenges and limits of its application.

Testing of the Ventilation Light in practice is not a subject of this partial report. This aspect will be dealt with in a further publication.

Chapter 2 deals with the issue of ventilation in housing and schools.

Chapter 3 delineates the state of the art in the literature on air pollution in housing and school environments.

The Annex (Chapter 5) contains an overview of the current sate of research on real air exchange.

Partial Report 2 - Testing of the Pilot Model

Introduction
The current report is the second part of the results of the research and development project monitoring and testing the performance of a Ventilation Light in housing and schools. The second partial report, “Ventilation Light - Testing of the Pilot Model” employs the theoretical basis on indoor air quality into possible technical solutions.

The report includes an exhaustive review of the available gas and ventilation sensors and of the market. The LUQAS sensor employed in the Ventilation Light is compared with the rest and evaluated.

The analysis of application opportunities and challenges is based on extensive pre-tests in the laboratory and in reality. In addition to exposing the sensor to a variety of single substances in the laboratory, the behavior of the sensor is analyzed in real life environment with combinations of substances in different concentration.

Furthermore, the sensor is exposed to indoor air with varying humidity. The issue of optimizing the spatial positioning of the sensor when put into practice to obtain reproducible comprehensible output is also treated.

The best method for treating these issues is a comparative analysis through which to verify and validate the data of the LUQAS evaluation kit.

The requirements of the hardware and the programming and parameters of the Ventilation Light were established on the basis of the data from the first field research in the property of the workgroup members, as well as from the specialized workshop carried out in April.
