Energy Management in Church Perishes
In spring 2001 UTEC conducted a training of sextons of Evangelic Church Perishes Bremen (BEK). It became clear that more information and support is definitely needed within the Perish and that there is a great motivatipon amoungst the sextons. This became the basis for a larger project "Energy Management in Church Perishes". Within two years since October 2001, UTEC provided training for 33 Perishes in Bremen.
The aim of the project was essentially to save energy through non-investive measures. The project was financed by BEK and Bremer Energie-Konsens GmbH.
In essence, the consultancy of the perishes included:
- monthly evaluation of energy consumption
- optimized installation of heating regulators based on measurements of room and heating temperatures
- dissemination of information about the use of regulators ("On-the-spot training for sextons")
- identification of non-investive measures
These measures allowed to reduce the heating consumption between January and September 2002 by 11.7% compared to that of the same period the previous year. This equals a total of 721 MWh (25,000 l heating oil, 40,000 m³ natural gas, and 125 MWh district heating). The savings per building were distributed as shown below:

By 2003 the success of the project was recognized by all participants.
It is expected that even after the end of the project the participants would carry on with a major part of the savings measures and that this would lead to a sustainable reduction in the environmental and financial pressures of the participating perishes.
